Empowering Vulnerable Communities Italia ODV – Organizzazione di Volontariato

Our mission

Our mission is to cooperate with vulnerable communities in south-western Uganda to provide them with a healthy and sustainable lifestyle. We aim to improve their health, nutrition and education through evidence-based projects. We do this by ensuring the sustainability of our projects, giving ownership and responsibility for the activities to the beneficiaries themselves.

Areas of intervention

Maternal and child health

We improve maternal and child health through projects that facilitate access to care.

Infectious disease reduction

We reduce infectious diseases through health education and distribution of hygiene materials.

Adaptation Strategies and Food Security

We increase food security through projects on sustainable food and income production.

Education

We support some Batwa children in their education by providing them with a quality, long-term education.

Who we are

We are a group of Ugandan and Italian friends and volunteers from different professional backgrounds, but with the same values and humanitarian goals. Together we decided to create this non-profit volunteer organisation, with the intention of working with the most vulnerable populations in south-western Uganda. We are dedicated to improving their living conditions through targeted, evidence-based interventions.

Where we work

Our Ugandan office is located within a short walk from the hospital in Bwindi. The 10 settlements we serve are bordering the adjacent forest, with the most remote being two hours away by motorbike. The roads to the settlements are tortuous and often unpracticable, limiting the ability of these populations to access the hospital in Bwindi.

Use of the Funds

Of the total funds received, 98% reach the beneficiaries directly. This includes 80% of the funds dedicated to the purchase of materials needed to carry out the activities. 11% is made up of logistical costs for bringing these materials directly to the 10 settlements we support. 8% is made up of the salaries of the staff who enable us to carry out our activities. While only 1% is attributable to running costs.
