Empowering Vulnerable Communities Italia ODV – Organizzazione di Volontariato

Maternal and child health

Our objectives are to increase accessibility to hospital care and assisted deliveries to all vulnerable populations, with a special focus on women and children.

Rationale

Hospital attendance of indigenous peoples such as the Batwa has always been very limited, as it includes indirect costs which in most cases are a limitation for these families. Although most treatment is free of charge, costs related to transport, meals and supportive materials for deliveries were the biggest barrier to accessing health care. As a result, services were never optimally utilised, with many cases of delayed hospitalisation with worsened conditions, resulting in increased disability and mortality.

Impact

  • The percentage of hospital births increased from 50% to 90%
  • Early hospital discharges decreased from 30% to 5%.
  • Hospitalisations, among all age and gender categories, increased by 40%
  • Hospital mortality of Batwa patients decreased by 1/3
  • Pregnant women receive meals in hospital to help them recover
