Empowering Vulnerable Communities Italia ODV – Organizzazione di Volontariato

Our history

EVC CBO (Community Based Organisation) was born in Uganda in 2020 from the passion of three nurses with experience in humanitarian work in developing countries and in research. Our team grew over the following months and years by integrating different professionals and experiences, thus increasing the ‘scientific capital’ behind our decision-making. In 2023 we therefore founded EVC Italia ODV (Organizzazione Di Volontariato) to better support the activities of EVC Uganda.

Our activities started with a tight budget, collected as a ‘wedding gift’, which we immediately decided to use to realise our ‘mission’. We needed to create targeted, effective and evidence-based projects to ensure the best use of our limited resources.

So over the last 3 years we have developed 7 projects divided into 4 thematic areas, reaching all 217 targeted families.

Some of our major achievements are:

– 80% of deliveries take place in the hospital by specialised health personnel ready for emergency interventions such as caesarean sections, whereas before our intervention more than half of the deliveries took place in the villages, without medical supervision.
– All families cultivate a kitchen garden and participate in our sustainable agriculture project, whereas before the project no one cultivated a garden of their own.
– 8 villages are involved in our animal husbandry projects, whereas before no sustainable animal rearing activity was taking place.
– Some of the oldest and most vulnerable individuals now receive monthly support in food, comfort goods and basic necessities.
– In 2 years we have facilitated more than 500 hospitalisations, limiting late presentations and early discharges against medical advice, as was often the case before our projects on access to care.
– 2 children have access to long-term education in quality institutions, giving them a better future perspective.

Our Values

We collaborate with the populations

Our work involve the affected populations themselves in guiding us in the planning, and especially in the implementation of the projects.

We are facilitators and enablers

We do not tell our collaborators what to do, but we guide them to choose what to do and how to do it, in order to achieve the best result by their own means.

We build our work on scientific evidence

We use scientific approaches adapting them to our context and to the needs of the populations we collaborate with, so as to offer the best answers to their needs, respecting local knowledge.

We enhance human capital

Through our empowerment method, we give our collaborators the necessary knowledge and support them in gaining experience with the aim of expanding their capabilities, so that our actions can have a significant and long-term impact.

We are propositive, innovative and pragmatic

We discuss with our collaborators new ideas and possible effective and evidence-based solutions, so as to assess with them their feasibility, their interest and their need for support in implementing them.

The vulnerable population we support

We decided to support the vulnerable populations living in south-western Uganda. We currently work with the indigenous Batwa population as they are the most disadvantaged of all.

The Batwa and their challenges

– One of the world’s poorest and most vulnerable populations.
– They live in marginalisation in 10 settlements adjacent to the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, their natural habitat before being evicted from it.
– Their life expectancy is only 51 years.
– They are called ‘Pygmies’ and their short stature is a consequence of growth retardation due to inadequate nutrition throughout their entire lives.

Areas of intervention

Maternal and child health

We improve maternal and child health through projects that facilitate access to care.

Infectious disease reduction

We reduce infectious diseases through health education and distribution of hygiene materials.

Adaptation Strategies and Food Security

We increase food security through projects on sustainable food and income production.

Education

We support some Batwa children in their education by providing them with a quality, long-term education.
